Edinburgh Portrait Session With 10 Week Old Baby
"The universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew....there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore... the only appropriate state of mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of that." - Terry Pratchett, The Last Hero
New baby, New Year, new photo session. This week I went to take photos of 10 week old endlessly curious Max at his home in Morningside on a January day, late afternoon.
Max was in a good mood and was fascinated by the flash, which had a red light on it each time it's used. This meant that I got some really great pictures of him looking directly at the camera. However every baby has a different personality. For Max, his lively nature made swaddling out of the question. At 10 weeks old he was well and truly strong enough to break out of any swaddling, should he choose so. I plumped instead for loose wraps for his photos.
Max was as good as gold for a good hour or so, which is wonderful. But reached his limit when his tummy started to rumble - so went back to mum for cuddles and his bottle.
When taking photos of babies I feel it's important to get close up to take all those little details that would otherwise be forgotten. Then his Mum and Dad can look back in years to come and see exactly how small those little hands and feet were. However Max's Mum is certain that Max's feet are in fact giant for his size.... I think she'll change her mind as they continue to grow as he gets older and when she looks back at these photos!
